Every Kindle has its own email address. Anything sent to that address by an approved sender shows up in your library within a few minutes, synced to the device and to the Kindle app on your phone. This guide shows how to get this working and how Libtro does the sending for you.
1. Find your Kindle's email address
- Sign in to your Amazon account and open Manage Your Content and Devices (under "Account & Lists").
- Go to the Preferences tab and open Personal Document Settings.
- Under "Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings" you will see an address ending in
@kindle.com. Each device and each app has its own.
2. Approve your sending email
For security, Amazon only accepts files from addresses you have approved. On the same page, under Approved Personal Document E-mail List, click "Add a new approved e-mail address" and enter the email that will send the books (for example, your Gmail).
If you skip this step, sending seems to work, but the book never arrives, and Amazon usually sends a notice to the sender.
3. Choose an accepted format
Send-to-Kindle accepts EPUB, PDF and DOCX, among others. EPUB is the best option on screen: the text adjusts to the font size you choose. PDF keeps the page fixed, which is good for material with many images or tables, but tends to look too small on 6-inch screens. If your book is in PDF or DOCX, it is worth converting it to EPUB first.
4. Send through Libtro
- In Settings → Kindle, enter your Kindle email, your sending email and an app password. For Gmail, the rest is already filled in.
- In My files, open Actions → Send to Kindle for the book you want.
- Follow the sending in the Queue. In a few minutes the book appears on the Kindle (with the device connected to Wi-Fi).
Each send can be up to 20 MB, because of email provider limits. Larger files can be made lighter with Actions → Reduce size.
If the book didn't arrive
- Check that the sending email is on Amazon's approved list (step 2).
- Check that the Kindle address is correct, with no spaces, ending in
@kindle.com. - Make sure the Kindle is connected, and sync manually under "Sync & Check for Items".
- Files protected by DRM cannot be sent this way.
